Long Beach Memorial Medical Center Select Patient Care Tracking Technology
System Will Track Patients &
Equipment for 35 Operating Room Departmen December 19, 2006 (Mission Viejo, CA) Patient Care Technology Systems (PCTS) announced today that the 741-bed Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Miller Children’s Hospital of Long Beach, California,
part of the Memorial Health System, has selected the company’s Amelior ORTracker® automatic tracking software
to improve workflow within its surgical services departments. The software, used to locate, track and orchestrate the flow
of patients, staff and mobile medical surgical services equipment, will streamline care and optimize department management.
The automatic tracking software acts as a real-time communication portal integrating patient, staff and
medical equipment location information. Data is collected from wireless patient and asset badges and sensors using an active
RFID network throughout the surgical services department. The software, designed to integrate communications from surgery
scheduling and nurse call systems in addition to wireless telephony, provides busy surgery departments with information on
the care status of their patients to avoid delays in patient flow caused by a lack of information. Information is organized
in status view screens for each stage of the department from registration to recovery units. A customized map view of the
department depicts the location and status of patients, mobile medical equipment and room availability to further enhance
department management. Information is updated automatically through the use of RFID locating technology which automatically
updates patient information, eliminating the need for manual data entry. Phone calls, overhead pages and other intrusive or
less efficient methods of orchestrating care are significantly reduced. Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Miller Children’s Hospital have been using automatic tracking software from PCTS in their emergency department
for more than four years, resulting in streamlined patient length of stays and improved department management.
“We are looking forward to enhancing our patient flow utilizing the RFID technology offered by
Amelior ORTracker software,” said John Stewart, executive director of Information Services, Long Beach Memorial
Medical Center and Miller Children’s Hospital. “The improved workflow in our Emergency Department convinced us
that RFID tracking would provide the same or greater benefit in Surgical Services.” “We
are very pleased to expand the breadth of our support for Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s high acuity patient
flow needs,” said Tony Marsico, CEO of PCTS. “Perioperative departments have a tremendous amount of information
and resources to orchestrate in a timely manner in support of their patients’ care. The Amelior ORTracker system
represents a highly efficient solution to integrate all key patient care information in a manner that reduces the administrative
demands on care givers and enhances a department’s overall efficiency.”
