Combination Of Wi-Fi
And RFID To Be Used For Real-Time Location Products And Services
May 25, 2007
London, England
(AHN) - According to backers of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, wireless tracking systems can be helpful
in protecting patients and students on campuses during emergencies.
When RFID tags and Wi-Fi are combined, real-time
tracking is possible inside a wireless network.
Motorola's Angelo Lamme told BBC news that tracking students
on campuses could come in handy during a fire emergency.
"You would know where your people are at any given
moment," he said.
Head of wireless at Siemens, Marcus Birkl, commented that location tracking of assets and
people was of tremendous interest to companies, hospitals and educational facilities, that install Wi-Fi networks.
Both Siemens and Motorola exhibited at London's "The Wireless Event," selling real-time location products.
Siemens is on the edge of developing a complete system with Finnish company Ekahau, to track objects and people.
The way the locating system works is when battery-powered RFID tags communicate with a minimum of three wireless access
points inside a network to figure out a specific triangular location.
Birkl said, "The tags have a piece of
software on them and they detect the signal strength of different access points.
He added, "This information
is sent back to the server and it then models the movement of the tag depending on the shift in signal strength detected."
The system can also help track down Wi-Fi equipped devices such as laptops, tablet PCs as well as Wi-Fi enabled
phones.
