Google To Acquire Location-Based Map Company Panoramio

May 31, 2007

Mountain View, CA (AHN) - Internet giant Google Wednesday acquired Panoramio, a Spanish-based photo-sharing Web site that creates location-based photos using Google's mapping services.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Panoramio, founded in October 2005, allows Internet users to upload photos that are then overlayed with location information from Google Maps or Google Earth.

Panoramio and Google have worked together since the start of the year, when Panoramio became the default layer of Google Earth.

Although few details were released, Panoramio and Google said the "'geo-location" technology used will be integrated into Google's mapping services.

Panoramio told users they can remove photos and personal data before it is given to Google.
