GPS device for rent
at Grand Canyon; available soon at other venues
June 28, 2007
PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) - Visitors
to the Grand Canyon can now rent a hand-held GPS device to help them find their way around the South Rim of the park.
Introductory rates for the Funfinder GPS units at the Grand Canyon are US$11.50 a day. They are scheduled to be available
by July under an agreement between the Grand Canyon Association, a nonprofit association that supports visitor services at
the park, and Funfinder Inc., a Phoenix technology company.
The devices are designed to provide an easy way to
navigate the Grand Canyon's trails and roads, and they also offer information about lodges and educational amenities in
the park.
Visitors can rent the Funfinders at three locations in the park, the Canyon View Information Plaza Books
& More, Desert View Information Center, and Kolb Studio, and also in nearby Tusayan at the National Geographic Imax Visitor
Center.
Funfinder said the units will be available for tourists to use in Washington, D.C., starting Oct. 1, and
at Vail Valley Ski Resorts in Colorado (Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Keystone) in November. The devices not only provide
directions but can help users find everything from restrooms to restaurants.
Funfinder spokesman Ryan Woodcock
said the company is looking at offering the devices in other venues as well, including more national parks and amusement parks.
