of GPS Summer Open
July 15, 2007
A handful of local participants advanced in the GPS Summer Open
tennis tournament Saturday at the GPS Tennis Center.
Chattanooga's Sarah Evans, the No. 2 seed, advanced to
the girls 18s championship match against top-seeded Epiphany Turner of Memphis today at 10 a.m. Top seed Richard Gamble of
Harrison reached the Boys 16s semifinals today at 8 a.m. at GPS.
Semifinals and finals in singles, doubles and
mixed doubles in all age groups start today at 8 a.m. at GPS.
After a first-round bye, 15-year-old Evans blanked
unseeded Amanda Smith of Cleveland for a 6-0, 6-0, semifinal win.
"It was pretty hot out, but I tried not
to think about it too much," Evans said. "I decided to work on some things during the match that I've been meaning
to work on and it went well. I'm just taking it one match at a time."
Evans is a rising sophomore at GPS
who played the No. 1 and No. 2 positions for the Bruisers tennis team during their 2006 and 2007 TSSAA Division II state championships.
Gamble defeated unseeded Daniel Smith of Chickamauga, Ga., 6-0, 6-1, in a quarterfinal. The 15-year old is homeschooled.
"I played really well. My serve and volley felt really good," Gamble said. "I really enjoy being the
No. 1 seed, because I just come out here to have fun and I always like coming to play at GPS."
